WellStone Behavioral Health is the doing business as (DBA) name of the Huntsville – Madison County Mental Health Board located in Huntsville, Alabama. Holding the first meeting in April 1969, the organization was a direct result of the Alabama Legislature passing Act 310, which authorized the formation of regional mental health boards across the state.  A 12 member board of directors governs the organization with six appointees from the City of Huntsville and six from the Madison County Commission.  Doing business as the Mental Health Center of Madison County and located in downtown Huntsville for over 25 years, the organization now operates from an 11 acre campus on South Memorial Parkway and changed its DBA to WellStone Behavioral Health in October of 2014.

WellStone Behavioral Health is a name that references the history of our community. Long before Huntsville became known as the Rocket City, a thriving local resort attracted people from across the country who came here for renewal and restoration. That resort was located where Monte Sano State Park is now and the park’s name is actually the Spanish term for “Mountain of Health”. We like that idea…that WellStone can be a “mountain of health” for anyone on the recovery journey. The word “Well” in our name represents a focus on wellness rather than illness; “Stone” suggests a strong and firm foundation…much like the mountains that overlook our valley; and “Behavioral Health” signifies a broader mission that emphasizes the integrated health of the whole person.

WellStone Behavioral Health primarily serves the residents of Madison County in northern Alabama. With an annual operating budget of nearly $14 million and almost 300 employees, WellStone served over 8,500 children, adolescents, and adults last year who experienced a mental health and/or substance use disorder. With a broad array of residential options available for adults, WellStone now operates 11 facilities throughout the area and also provides care through the following programs:
